It has recently been brought to our attention that the promoter of our 'Songs of the People' concert with historian Michael Wood at the Holywell Rooms in May has been accused of making a number of historical racist comments on social media.

Until these accusations are comprehensively disproved, we have no option but to sever all connections with Oxford Music and Folk. We fully support Kathryn Roberts, Sean Lakeman, and Sam Sweeney for doing the same. We believe in promoting events that celebrate diversity and inclusion for all individuals and as a band have always stood firmly against racism and discrimination.

We will continue to use our platform to promote a society where everyone feels safe, welcome, and respected.

However we are pleased to say that we have been able to work directly with the Holywell Rooms to keep this gig on our tour.

Those of you who have tickets will be receiving a refund from Oxford Music & Folk, but we would ask you to rebook using the following links:

Matinee Performance at 2.30pm book here

Evening Performance at 7.30pm book here

Thanks everyone.
Show of Handstag:showofhands.co.uk,2005:Post/71043082022-11-18T17:00:00+00:002022-12-12T13:07:28+00:00The Dog Show Sessions’ Live album release 01 FEB ‘23 + Royal Albert Hall News
Following the highly successful Spring Tour with Track Dogs - we are pleased to announce the live album ‘The Dog Show Sessions Live’ will be released on 1st February, with pre-order from 25th November

2022 saw a great alliance and friendship between the two groups, culminating in an electrifying killer set for the headline gig of Shrewsbury Folk Festival. The combination of these two bands has all the depth of the shared folk genres with a whole new level of in-your-face energy.

SHOW OF HANDS AND MIRANDA SYKES ARE REUNITED AFTER FOUR YEARS APART FOR TRIUMPHANT AUTUMN TOUR

West Country legends Show of Hands and formidable folk singer Miranda Sykes are finally returning to the gig circuit this autumn for a long-anticipated reunion tour.

Miranda will join Steve and Phil on stage to captivate audiences for the first time since 2018, where together, the group will be performing live renditions of their award-winning hits and festival favourites.

Lead singer songwriter Steve Knightley says: “It’s going to be quite emotional in a way, a very reflective atmosphere after a long time apart.

To return to the stage after two cancelled tours and Covid restrictions will be really quite something – that atmosphere is going to be incredible.”

The trio have worked together since 2005 and enjoyed a remarkable 15 years on the road before various circumstances halted their progress.

“We’ll be launching new songs, playing dance classics and revisiting solo pieces. The usual melodic narrative will be accompanied by our trademark West Country base, but it will take on a more reflective form in a response to the times we’ve all been through.

The UK tour kicks off at the end of October and will see the band perform at a variety of unforgettable venues, including the famous Cadogan Hall in London and the Hall for Cornwall – a location the trio hasn’t performed at for over five years.

Last year Show of Hands fan and Abbotsbury Festival regular, Liz Atkins, walked 226 miles from Abbotsbury to Cropready to raise funds for Teenage Cancer Trust. Story & pictures below:

Paula’s Way

Abbotsbury to Cropredy

4 July – 12 August 2021

I walked the 226 miles from Abbotsbury to Cropredy last year in memory of a young lady, Paula Walsh from Cropredy, who died of leukaemia in 1998 3 weeks short of her 17th birthday and to raise funds for Teenage Cancer Trust.

The idea was to walk between the Show of Hands Festival and the Cropredy Festival and although both of these became victims to the dreaded lockdown I went ahead anyway.

I left Abbotsbury on Sunday 4 July with my Airedale Terrier Holly spurred on by John, my husband and old friends, the Sheldons and Pilleys.

After three separate weeks of walking with both Holly and my other Airedale, Malham, I arrived in Cropredy on 12 August accompanied by more old friends including the Sheldons.

Most of the walking was excellent except where it wasn’t. Those bits, which included having to cross the A303, pale into insignificance by comparison with the beauty of the countryside and the generosity of friends and family who not only helped me along the way but also contributed to an amazing £7,000 for Teenage Cancer Trust.

SHOW OF HANDS AND TRACK DOGS UNITE FOR ULTIMATE WEST COUNTRY-MEETS-MADRID

SPRING TOUR IN UK’S FIRST ‘THE DOG SHOW SESSIONS’

Two of folk music’s most celebrated bands are joining forces for the first time in what is set to be a sell-out UK tour. West country legends Show of Hands (Steve Knightley, Phil Beer) and Irish American roots quartet Track Dogs (Garrett Wall, Dave Mooney, Howard Brown & Robbie K. Jones) are fusing their unique harmonies for a one-off collaboration that will see them perform 17 must-see dates across England.

The superband will bring their incredible voices along with banjos, guitars, a trumpet and a mandolin for the unmissable spring tour. This is the first time the bands have toured together after Show of Hands’ lead singer songwriter discovered Track Dogs playing in Ibiza four years ago. They have since taken the UK festival scene by storm.

Steve Knightley says: “Phil [Beer] and I will start with a couple of songs – as I sing, Track Dogs will be translating in Spanish. It will be a unique fusion of harmonies, never heard before. Think sun-soaked Latin rhythms with a West Country heartbeat. An unforgettable evening of six guys sharing vocals, songs and stories and swapping melodies.

He adds: “Track Dogs are by far the best harmony group I’ve heard outside of America. Every single one of them is a lead singer. It’s going to be fantastic.”

Track Dogs consists of Garrett Wall, Dave Mooney, Howard Brown & Robbie K. Jones. The quartet bring heritage from Ireland, the UK and the USA to fuse folk, Latin, Americana and bluegrass for a unique and dynamic sound. The band reside in Madrid and they are about to release their anticipated new album, Where To Now.

The UK tour follows a preview show in Ibiza that occurred at the end of April. The tour will see the bands perform at the iconic Minack Theatre in Penzance, Cornwall, as well as venues in Leicester, Milton Keynes, Kent and Norwich.

The first set will be short and sweet and taken from my standing repertoire. The hour long second half will knit together a number of traditional, contemporary, and original songs about travelling.

These will be arranged for the usual array of instruments and will tell the story of being on the road, both now and in older times.

Looking forward to shaking off the lockdown blues and being ‘On the Road’ once again.

Songs from the West with Steve Knightley

Steve is a multi-award-winning singer-songwriter/musician and founder member of folk/acoustic roots trail-blazers ‘Show of Hands’ described by Peter Gabriel as ‘one of the great English bands’. A constant throughout Steve’s work is his ability to root his songs in time and place, notably the West Country where he was raised.

Informed by a love of narrative and English traditional folk music, Knightley writes historically accurate songs that resonate with contemporary meaning. He has an extraordinary ability to bring the past vividly, smack bang into the present. It’s a gift that fuels his reputation as an ‘issues’ writer. The seminal ‘Country Life’ earned him the title ‘the gravel voiced spokesman of the rural poor’ and his anti-banking rant ‘Arrogance, Ignorance and Greed’ picked up the gong for ‘Best Song’ at the BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards.

Change of line-up

Over the years you may be aware that Steve and Phil have never worked for set fees but for a percentage of the total ticket sales - this has been their business model from the village hall to the Albert Hall and has enabled many of you to promote risk-free ’Show of Hands’ concerts yourselves.

However, with less than a month to go it seems that lots of people are still understandably hesitant about returning to live music venues and it is with heavy hearts that we realise that the projected income simply cannot sustain the larger four-piece line up featuring Miranda and Cormac.

So rather than cancel or postpone shows the evening will now feature Steve and Phil in their original duo format, with the first set focusing on songs from the forthcoming album ’Singled Out' (pre-order CD here) and the second set being a mix of new material and classic 'Show of Hands' anthems.

We do hope that you understand the situation. Times are hard for everyone in entertainment at present and we haven’t taken this decision lightly, but with your support and goodwill we hope that this will still be a popular and successful tour and Steve and Phil look forward to seeing you out there.

Folk supergroup Show of Hands are finally reuniting to perform on the neglected stages of the UK.

Music legends Phil Beer, Steve Knightley, Miranda Sykes and Cormac Byrne will return to captivate audiences with live renditions of their award-winning hits and festival favourites, two years since their concerts were cancelled due to Covid-19.

The band will perform a mouthwatering compilation of iconic signature tracks from the last 25 years, encapsulated on their soon to be released new album 'Singled Out'.

Show of Hands latest compilation album includes 'Columbus (Didn't Find America)' and their two Folk Award-winning songs, ‘Arrogance Ignorance & Greed’ (AIG) and ‘Country Life'. Other Show of Hands greats, 'The Keeper', 'Bristol Slaver' and 'Roots' are joined by their latest lockdown single 'The Best One Yet'.

The album will be available on their upcoming tour and from Show of Hands website only.

Abbotsbury Summer Family Festival has been rescheduled to 2nd July 2022. All of this year's artists have recorded sets for you to enjoy from the comfort of home, streaming on YouTube from Sunday 18 - 25 July.

Abbotsbury Online brings you sets from Steve Knightley & Phil Beer plus the full Show of Hands band as well as half hour sets from our lovely guest bands. The Full Festival Line Up includes both the afternoon and evening sets totalling nearly 4 hours of music.

For the afternoon set Phil and Steve will perform as a Duo and also introduce the specially filmed sets from Ranagri, Gerry Colvin, Hannah Sanders & Ben Savage.

The evening set sees Show of Hands joined by the remarkable Martyn Joseph, to play the full evening set from Abbotsbury Gardens as they intended to perform on the day. Miranda Sykes & Cormac Byrne join Phil and Steve for the full Show of Hands band sound. We are hoping that this film will help to pay the artists and crew the fees they would have been paid had the live event gone ahead - so if you have more than one person watching at your home do consider buying more than one ticket - it all helps!
This is the first live album for duo Steve and Phil since their very first release in 1992. The live stream on Saturday 28th November will also be their first ever ticketed online gig, marking a significant shift for the industry in a challenging year of Covid-19, which saw Show of Hands cancel their long-awaited 22-date autumn tour.

It was a poignant, emotional reunion for the group, who were joined by Miranda for the first time since her breast cancer diagnosis. The gig was recorded at Exeter Northcott Theatre on 31st October and was the first time in over a year that we have seen the stars perform together.

Lead singer songwriter Steve Knightley says: “This album perfectly captures the atmosphere we created on stage that night and throughout our 2019 tour. It was joyous, like we’d never been away – and to have Miranda there again was even more special. Miranda and Cormac are the line-up that Phil and I have always envisaged, ever since we’ve even been playing as a duo. Miranda is such a solid musician, she has this ability to root everything – then with Cormac’s percussion – we finally realised our dream.

We've never recorded a live album with Cormac on percussion and it's so much more than just a drum kit. It's like a heartbeat. He's got such an infectious charismatic presence on stage from beginning to end.

The new version, produced by Rolling Stones collaborator Matt Clifford, who has often played keyboards on Show of Hands’ albums and at the Devon band’s five Royal Albert Hall sell-outs, is a driving, savvy song about the transatlantic slave trade triangle and the key part the city of Bristol played in it – becoming Britain’s premier slaving port by the early 1700s.

Knightley, who has a degree in politics and history, says: “I wrote the song after watching a BBC ‘special' from Bristol Docks that somehow managed to avoid the word ‘slavery’ throughout”.

The trade triangle operated from the late 16th to the early 19th century carrying slaves, cash crops and manufactured goods between Europe, West Africa and the Caribbean and American colonies.

The succinct lyrics of the song tell the story of a Bristol slave trader “To my house in Clifton/I bring capital from pain/Trinkets to Africa/Slaves to Jamaica/Rum and tobacco back again and again”.

Recognising the recent incident where the bronze statue of prominent Bristol slave trader Edward Colston was toppled by Black Lives Matter protestors and thrown into the harbour, Knightley has added apt closing words to the song:

“I will drown/your cold-stone heart/in the ocean”

Says Knightley: “The song highlights the inescapably shameful but often overlooked history of a city. Hopefully it contributes a little towards redressing the balance and highlights that period.
Show of Handstag:showofhands.co.uk,2005:Post/62703542020-04-03T13:13:05+01:002020-04-03T13:13:05+01:00Steve Knightley Songbooks now available as digital downloads
See our shop for digital downloads of Songbooks 3, 4 and 5 featuring lyrics and musical scores from many of Steve's most popular songs
Show of Handstag:showofhands.co.uk,2005:Post/62085352020-02-08T08:59:45+00:002021-12-18T12:59:37+00:00Tour Merch available while stocks last!!
Tour merchandise now up on the website! David started making instruments in the 1970’s, eventually working closely with his son Nick, who made his first instruments with David over 20 years ago. Together they have been making and repairing top quality guitars and mandolins to their clients specifications. Following David’s death in 2017 Nick is proud to continue the business and legacy in a way that he hopes his father would approve.

“The Show of Sound is defined by them, in particular the mandocello has been responsible for some of our best loved songs such as Country Life and Roots. In recent years the sweet punchy tone of the tenor guitar has inspired even more.We are delighted that Nick is continuing the tradition of craftsmanship that his father began, as well as creating beautiful instruments Nick is always available for advice and instrument maintenance. On stage I feature the guitars, mandocello, tenor guitar and also the unique South American tones of the cuatro and with Nick’s help hope to be featuring these Oddy instruments for years to come.”

Held this year on the 6th July, it's a lovely relaxed afternoon within a natural amphitheatre created within the Sub Tropical Gardens of Abbotsbury, near Weymouth. The gates open to the gardens at 10am, and your wristband allows you full access to wander round the fabulous surroundings. Feel free to bring a picnic, or else there is a beautiful cafe on site and BBQ available within the festival area.

Bring your cash with you as we run a raffle every year to win an Oddy instrument - this year it is a cuatro used by Steve Knightley. All money raised goes to a nominated charity.

Music starts at 3pm and runs through to dusk at 9.45pm with a final concert from Show of Hands.

Parking on the site is free. Wristbands also allow access to the swannery and children's farm throughout the weekend.

BBC award-winning Irish percussionist, Cormac Byrne (“startling percussion work” - The Guardian) and internationally renowned UK fiddler, Adam Summerhayes (“astonishing, all-out virtuosity” - The New York Times) create astounding music for the 21st century which defies definition. Combining elements of their own deep musical traditions, their music is both “utterly compelling” (BBC Music Magazine) and “bridges the gap between Ireland and the world” (The Sunday Business Post).

Whilst it’s almost impossible, intentionally or otherwise, to track down a Show Of Hands concert review that doesn’t praise the consummate musicianship of Steve Knightley and Phil Beer or celebrate the strength of Steve’s song-writing (and rightly so) – one fact that often goes unmentioned is how this most skilful and hard-working of bands never allows the grass to grow underfoot.

Following the cathedral tour ‘Sanctuary’ and the spring duo shows, the current ‘Joint Venture’ tour sees long time Seth Lakeman percussionist, Cormac Byrne, join the line-up, replacing bass-player and vocalist, Miranda Sykes, currently on maternity leave. With an array of percussive instruments, including cymbals and bodhran, Byrne’s deft, rhythmic touches allow for new song arrangements of audience favourites such as openers Cousin Jack and Country Life. The Knightley/Lakeman co-write, Haunt You, is an obvious choice given Cormac’s place on the stage and the subtle and succinct reworking of older material is a notable feature of the set, drawing new textures from stage favourites like Santiago.

The smattering of new songs being road-worked from the soon-to-be recorded ‘Joint Venture’ album also benefit from Byrne’s presence: Battlefield Dance Floor is a Dhol Foundation-inspired, world music romp and the playful Dreckley, a “Cornish-Caribbean tale of clotted cream” - alliteration gone mad! Pick of the new songs on first hearing is You’ll Get By, which is simply one of those fine songs that Steve conjures up for every album, apparently effortlessly.
Cold Frontier and Exile (sung by Phil) allow Cormac a backstage breather - which he probably needed ahead of a dynamic set of Tunes that his bodhran-playing propels ever onward and which showcases the brilliance of Phil Beer’s fiddle-playing, a feat repeated on set closer, The Galway Farmer. If there was a scribbled note on Cormac’s set list for this one, it must have simply said “as fast as possible”!

The Joint Venture tour runs through November and into early December.
Nicholas John
www.wordsong.org.uk

Miranda and husband Dan are embarking on their own adventure with their first baby due in November, and so Cormac Byrne (legendary percussionist of Seth Lakeman Band fame) steps into the breach with his spectacular talents to complete the Show of Hands autumn trio.

Together, Steve and Phil will deliver the festival favourites that fans know and love, with Cormac adding a new twist. They’ll also showcase the results of Steve’s recent songwriting

with ‘No Secrets’ ‘Make the right noises’ ‘Battlefield Dance floor’ and ‘Dreckley’ all featuring on the forthcoming studio album. Steve and Phil have an unblemished track record when it comes to identification and encouragement of emerging talent on the music scene, and for their autumn tour they have enlisted Alden, Patterson and Dashwood – a striking combination of guitar, fiddle, dobro and voices (with Findlay Napier making an appearance on the Scottish dates).

Steve says, “We are thrilled for Miranda and Dan and while we’ll certainly miss Miranda on the tour it’s given us an opportunity to do things a little differently. Cormac is a sublime musician and his input adds a fresh edge to our sound. And as for Alden, Patterson and Dashwood – you’re going to love ‘em!”
Show of Handstag:showofhands.co.uk,2005:Post/53532442018-07-19T12:53:04+01:002018-07-19T14:06:16+01:00Clearance Sale
Hop over to our store where you will find many items of merchandise and CD's have been discounted as part of our summer clearance sale!
Show of Handstag:showofhands.co.uk,2005:Post/53427992018-07-12T13:05:00+01:002020-10-14T15:03:27+01:00Abbotsbury 2018
Another fantastic day at our 20th annual Abbotsbury Family Festival.
The military base in Topsham Road is staging the events to show people what’s behind the ‘big red-brick wall’ and engage with the community.

Thousands of people walk or drive past the Barracks every day. Yet the vast majority of the local community have never been inside the base and have little or no awareness of its work, or its important role in today’s military service.

Steve has a particular connection with the 6 Rifles battalion who are based at the Barracks – his grandfather Thomas Knightley had been in the Devonshire regiment, one of the Rifles’ forerunners, during the First World War.

“My grandfather served with the Devonshires in WW1 and my stepbrother was a sergeant in the Royal Greenjackets. So, growing up in East Devon, I have always felt a great connection to both the Wyvern Barracks and the Rifles, and we were delighted to be asked to perform at such a prestigious occasion.”

Steve has composed a song specially for the event called ‘Swift and Bold’ – which is the motto of the Rifles Regiment.

Events take place on 5th, 6th and 7th July.
Show of Handstag:showofhands.co.uk,2005:Post/53087152018-06-23T20:30:00+01:002020-09-20T21:10:07+01:00Costa Del Folk
We are delighted to be returning to Portugal in October

Steve Knightley pays tribute to Alan in an article reproduced by Songlines Magazine:

‘Festivals are by nature as varied as the folk that create them. They can be chaotic but joyous, uncompromising and organic, structures yet still remain inclusive. I can think of no other event that more reflect the character of its founder than Shrewsbury Folk Festival and Alan Surtees.

I had met Alan at Bridgnorth Music and Arts Festival some years earlier but it was only when the event moved to its present home in 2007 that we really connected. The day after our show, he asked me if there was anything the festival could do to improve the overall experience of the performers. Extraordinarily this was the first time in 20 years I had been asked such a question by a director! Hesitantly I suggested, maybe some second hadn’t sofas, rugs and a general space where musicians could hang out, chat, and chill. Alan instantly agreed, cannily realising that the more the performers were enjoying themselves, the more relaxed they were onstage and the better they played.

This backstage experience was mirrored by investing in onstage production facilities that are world-class; the crew, the sound and lighting system and big-screen projection are unique to the festival and reflect once again that combination of playfulness and professionalism that Alan embodied.

Above all what I will remember most was the sheer joy that the music brought him and his delight when acts that he had championed connected with his crowd. He was always to be found out front or by the side of the stage with the irrepressible twinkle in his eye, giving me the thumbs up or mouthing “you tosser Knightley” if he thought I was being pretentious or pompous!'
Show of Handstag:showofhands.co.uk,2005:Post/49255342017-11-09T09:16:51+00:002018-02-22T10:34:28+00:00Great day at Abbotsbury, and record amount raised by our raffle!
We had another wonderful day at Abbotsbury!

Thanks to everyone who came to Abbotsbury this year – we had a great time, with amazing sets by Geoff Lakeman, Alice Jones, India Electric Company, Kit Hawes and Aaron Catlow and our own Miranda Sykes. The sun shone, the gardens looked amazing. It was lovely to see Nick and Sarah Oddy back this year, especially in light of the sad news of David Oddy recent death. However they were still generous enough to offer a prize for the raffle once again and so, in memory of David Oddy we raised money this year for a charity he wanted, the Exeter Rotary, who had given him and his wife so much support. We were so pleased to go on to raise a record amount is year, £1850 – thanks to the generosity of Show of Hands fans – thank you so much. We were enjoying ourselves so much we let our timings slip a bit, but the gardens came into their own at this point – as dusk fell, some inspired forward thinking by our lighting engineer Marcus meant that the beautiful gardens behind the stage were lit up in all their glory – what am amazing backdrop to the last few songs of the set! Thanks once again to the incredibly steam working at Abbotsbury for their help and enthusiasm. A great time had by all once again at the beautiful Abbotsbury Sub Tropical Gardens – looking forward to next year already!
Show of Handstag:showofhands.co.uk,2005:Post/49255332017-11-09T09:15:51+00:002021-08-27T21:47:40+01:00Farewell to David Oddy
It is with great sadness that we have to announce that this weekend we lost a friend, a master craftsman and a man who was an integral part of the Show of Hands story. Our prayers and thoughts go out to his family, friends and all that knew him. Rest in peace David, your voice lives on in every note that we play.

As many of you know, David & Nick visit Abbotsbury each year to showcase their beautiful hand made instruments and generously donate one every year for our raffle. This year it will be an Octave Mandola.

This year David asked for the money raised to go to Exeter Rotary, so we have taken the unusual step of opening up the raffle to everyone by creating a Just Giving page. Visit https://www.justgiving.com/crowdfunding/abbotsbury and for every £1 donated we will enter one ticket into the raffle, which will be drawn on the 1st July at Abbotsbury.

Singer songwriter Steve Knightley and multi instrumental wizard Phil Beer took to the stage of the iconic Royal Albert Hall for the fifth time with a memorable two and a half hour gig which prompted two standing ovations.

A dramatic opening saw the performance of Knightley’s spellbinding song Widecombe Fair, with Beer appearing high in the organ loft playing an eerie fiddle.

They were soon joined by the Devon’s 30-strong Lost Sound Chorus for the moving The Old Lych Way.The choir returned throughout the evening to swell the sound on some of the band’s best known songs and numbers from most recent albums Centenary and The Long Way Home.

Also taking to the ‘Kensington Village Hall’ stage were top mandolin player Rex Preston, 2014 BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards ‘Best Duo’ winners Phillip Henry and Hannah Martin and Canada’s hugely entertaining Matt Gordon & Leonard Podolak, whose fiddle and banjo music were punctuated by outbreaks of clog dancing and “hamboning” (traditional African American body percussion.

Long-time collaborator, composer and keyboards player Matt Clifford, added to the sound as did Chris Hoban, who has penned some of Show of Hands’ more recent songs including the epic Katrina (also performed on the night).

Towards the end of the first set, there was a surprise appearance by renowned Downton Abbey actor Jim Carter who read Siegfried Sassoon’s To Victory in his inimitable way before a performance of the WW1 song Hanging on the Old Barbed Wire while Alice Jones was a solo Morris dancer in ‘Twas on One’s April Morning’.

Show of Hands ‘anthems’ Country Life, Roots, and banker-baiting Arrogance Ignorance and Greed were all on the set list as well as the traditional favourite The Blue Cockade. Their trademark Cousin Jack, about emigrating Cornish miners, was the rousing finale before they stepped back on stage for Knightley’s “hard to believe it’s not traditional” number The Galway Farmer and a rousing Santiago with the whole company on stage.
Show of Handstag:showofhands.co.uk,2005:Post/49162282017-11-02T09:24:05+00:002017-11-02T09:24:05+00:00‘No Secrets’ – single to be released on 21st April
